Ways of Giving Back

There are many ways to give back to nonprofit organizations. Whether you are a patient, caregiver, surgeon, individual or corporate entity, or know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, at DiepCFoundation we want to share ways of giving back to the community we serve. Donate Your Time or Share a Testimonial There is nothing more rewarding than standing beside a volunteer at an event we are part of. These are patients who have been through this surgery and know first hand what to say to those who attend these events. We are grateful and will continue to reach out to our volunteers at these events. Writing a Testimonial and sharing it on our social media accounts is so appreciated. You can write it anonymously or we are happy to use your name and tag you on social media. Patients write testimonials telling us that viewing our DiepC Foundation Continue Reading →

Opportunities in Patient Advocacy

I feel so lucky to meet patient advocates who are passionate about their work in various breast cancer communities. Whether we have met in person at a conference, in training, or online I feel the positive impact of their work daily in my work as a patient advocate. I sat down with two of those advocates in this DiepCFoundation educational channel interview to discuss opportunities in patient advocacy. Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation I met Denise Barlow and Sandra Stewart Stanford in December of 2016 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium after opening DiepCFoundation earlier that year. They both welcomed me with opened arms and guided me through the full week of sessions inviting me to join the patient advocate meetings each evening. It was through them I learned about patient advocacy training at Project LEAD. The Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation was started by Dale Eastman in late 1992-93-time frame. Continue Reading →

Breast Cancer and Breast Reconstruction Awareness Year Round

The month of October is coming to an end. I read many valuable posts across all social media accounts during breast cancer awareness month using the hashtag #BCAM. Some even called it breast cancer action month. I like that. One day out of this month was set aside for male breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, and breast reconstruction awareness day. That is fantastic to bring this awareness but, my tag line during October, “No Pink Today” simply means I feel we need have breast cancer and breast reconstruction awareness year round. Why Breast Cancer Awareness is Important Year-Round Statistics do not lie. This is taken from The American Cancer Society Cancer Facts and Figures 2022. In the US in 2022, invasive breast cancer will be newly diagnosed in an estimated 287,850 women and 2,710 men, with an additional 51,400 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) diagnosed Continue Reading →

The Power of Education, Connections, and Giving

I moved back to Seattle in late 2018 to be near family. The following year, in October of 2019 I met with a team at Microsoft for the first time to present my story as a patient advocate, nonprofit leader, and two-time breast cancer survivor. Each October since then, I speak to teams at Microsoft providing information and education on the topic of breast reconstruction during their Microsoft Give Day. Each year I do these presentations I am inspired by the power of education, connections, and giving. How is the Power of Education Spreading? I often discuss this with my life-long friend, Thomas, who so generously sets these meetings up for me each year along with his Microsoft colleagues. We know, according to statistic from The National Breast Cancer Foundation, that one in eight women in the United States alone will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The United States! The Gifts We Know Mean so Much after Breast Reconstruction

Each weekday morning, I wake up, fix coffee, and sit at the computer in my office. I open Facebook and read the comments on the DiepCjourney private page I started and admin. Questions are answered, members share resources, and it  feels like a warm place to start my morning. Recently, I posted this infographic asking members, “What would you add to this list”? These are the gifts we know mean so much after breast reconstruction. Insights for Gifts from the Heart after Breast Reconstruction Surgery These ideas are taken directly from the comments members of the Journey willingly shared. They showed extreme gratitude for those who gave their time and treasure to these ladies when they were recovering from surgery and undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Listened, listened, listened. Have space for all the feelings. The best gift I got from people was grace…grace for forgotten meetings, grace for bad Continue Reading →

Virtual Attendance at World Urban Forum 2022

This past week, beginning June 26 and running through June 30, 2022, world leaders of all ages and levels of leadership gathered in Katowice, Poland for #WUF11. A Celebration of 10K Breast Reconstruction Flaps

On May 21, 2022, I will be back in San Antonio, Texas for a celebration of 10K breast reconstruction flaps. This event is put together by the plastic surgery group who did my DIEP flap surgery in December of 2014. This day holds great significance for me. I am grateful to PRMA for their fantastic efforts and support putting this 10K race together to celebrate the 10K flap surgeries they have performed for those affected by breast cancer. Thank you to the sponsors who are generously supporting this race. Honoring All the Patients Who Have Chosen Flap Surgery The 10K breast reconstruction flaps race is being held in San Antonio. The real honor goes to ladies across the world who have chosen or are planning flap surgery after being affected by breast cancer and losing their breasts to the disease. Over the years since I started my nonprofit organization, DiepCFoundation, Continue Reading →

Can We Drive Change in Breast Sensation Through Webinar Attendance?

We have become accustomed to attending online webinars. One I have watched from inception is the iBreastBook webinars. It was designed by oncoplastic breast surgeon Yazan Masannat. He is located in Aberdeen, Scotland. I continually learn from these webinars and appreciate the global presence of presenters and attendees. Yazan is driving change in breast surgery by exploring the latest surgical techniques in breast surgery in these online learning opportunities. The most recent one I attended I ask myself; can we drive change in breast sensation through webinar attendance?” Why is Driving Change in Breast Sensation Important to Me? The title of the webinar I am commenting on is, Mastectomy: What is New. The presenters were an impressive group of international surgeons in breast surgery. They are as follows: I am a patient who has experienced successful return of sensation to my breasts after DIEP flap breast reconstruction. It is equally Continue Reading →

Episode 14: Nipple Graft, an Innovation in Breast Reconstruction

New innovations are born out of passion, vision, clinical trials, and a scrupulous process of providing patient safety. In this episode of the DiepCJourney podcast, I speak to Billy Heim, COO of BioAesthetics. He is part of a team who developed an innovation in breast reconstruction, the NAC Graft, nipple areola complex graft. Here is the summary of Episode 14: Nipple Graft, an Innovation in Breast Reconstruction, of the DiepCJourney podcast. I am joined by Minas Chrysopoulo, MD, FACS, an internationally recognized expert in breast cancer reconstruction and shared decision making. He is president of PRMA (Plastic Reconstructive Microsurgical Associates). Dr. Chrysopoulo founded Toliman Health and is the creator of Toliman’s flagship app, Breast Advocate®, the world’s first shared decision-making app for breast cancer treatment and breast reconstruction. Saving the Nipple/Areola in Breast Surgery Dr. Chrysopoulo points out that a lot depends on the specific diagnosis. If there is an Continue Reading →

Staying Connected in 2022

We have rolled over another year of the calendar. Living through two years of a global pandemic has not been easy for any of us. There are traits we have learned about ourselves we did not know we were capable of, like patience and persistence. None of us anywhere on Earth were prepared to deal with all the rapid changes we continue to make because of the pandemic. And yet we have somehow stayed connected. I feel so strongly and see such immense value in staying connected in 2022. Staying Connected Through social media Whether you have one social media account or many, whether you have actually met your social media friends in person or not, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and others, these platforms connect us in valuable ways. I think there are two important questions to ask yourself when using social media. The answer to question number one should Continue Reading →
