American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery – Where to go to find a board certified micro surgeon
An important note: If a micro-surgeon you are looking for is not listed, please contact the organization (ASRM) at this number: 312.456.9579. They can verify if a micro-surgeon you are researching is a member. Some are not listed publicly on this site.
Board Certified Plastic Surgeons By Region
A note: Most but not all of these physicians perform flap surgeries. It is imperative that these questions are addressed with any plastic surgeon and center they are affiliated with no matter what reconstruction choice you make:
- How many microvascular procedures have they performed?
- What is their success rate? Understanding how flaps are monitored in autologous breast reconstruction is a conversation you can have at your consult.
- Do they work with a team and how long have they worked with this team? The shared expertise using the co-surgeon model is a benefit for the patient and surgeon.
- If they work with a team, is the team member also a microsurgeon or fully trained in all aspects of breast reconstruction microsurgery to fully assist if an autologous tissue reconstruction is performed?
- What are their credentials? Are they ASPS or ASRM certified?
- Do they have before and after photos?
- Do they perform sensory nerve reconstruction with or without a nerve graft?
- Do they use ERAS protocol (Enhanced Recovery after surgery) at their hospital facility?
- Can they refer me to other patients who have been to them so I can speak to them about their experience?
- What aesthetic outcomes can I expect based on my individual health history and case?
- What type of insurance carriers do they take?
- Will they accept insurance from out of state? These laws are tightening and it is a good question to ask as many patients travel across state lines to find the most qualified surgeon.
- Do they balance bill?
Due to shrinking insurance reimbursements to physicians some DIEP surgeons set their fee and ask the patient to pay the remaining amount that the insurance company will not cover (ie the difference between the doctor’s fee and the Allowable). This is known as “balance billing”. This can add 10’s of thousands of dollars to the patient’s final bill and is in addition to the out-of-pocket expenses described above. PRMA does NOT balance bill.

U.S. Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons
Oncoplastic breast surgery is an option offered to women and men that uses a conservative approach to breast reconstruction at the time of a lumpectomy. Oncoplastic breast surgeons are trained in plastic surgery techniques to achieve optimal aesthetic outcomes when a tumor is removed during a lumpectomy. As with all breast surgery techniques, be sure to ask the following questions during your consult with an oncoplastic breast surgeon:
- How many procedures have they performed?
- What is their success rate?
- Do they work with a team and how long have they worked with this team? The shared expertise is a factor as well as minimizing time for the patient and surgeon in surgery.
- What are their credentials? As one exapmple: Are they ASBrS certified?
- Do they have before and after photos?
- Can they refer me to other patients who have been to them so I can speak to them about their experience?
- What aesthetic outcomes can I expect based on my individual health history and case?
- What type of insurance carriers do they take?
