#NoBraDay Done the Right Way!

#NoBraDay Done the Right Way!

Today is National #NoBraDay and should be done the Right way by choosing a reason to actually project breast cancer awareness in a FullSizeRender(25)constructive, valuable way. Take PRMA, for example. This is a group of class act, well-trained, compassionate surgeons whose main passion is rebuilding women’s lives after breast cancer with reconstructive plastic surgery. Today, the patient liaison at their practice decided to post this info graphic using the hash tag #NoBraDay. This is valuable. This is constructive. Awareness, education and not flaunting the day in a tasteless, disrespectful way like so many have done on Social Media. Thank you PRMA for stepping up to the plate and respecting Breast Cancer Awareness Month and #NationalNoBraDay with dignity and purpose!

And Then There is This…..

National No Bra day has a Face Book page and what I find most offensive about their page is the logo on the side saying, “I “heart” Boobies”. A group I respect on Twitter is @FlatANDFabulous. Why? Because I embrace choice when it comes to breast reconstruction and going flat and fabulous is a choice. What must they think about this campaign? I hope, on some level they aren’t even taking the time to respond to this day and waste valuable time. They do spend time educating and supporting those who live their logo, “Once you go flat, you never go back!”

Be Proactive, Positive and Constructive!

With that being said, I will stop there at my opinion about this day because one year ago I was a breast amputee like many women before I chose to have reconstruction. I didn’t know about #NoBraDay last year and am glad I didn’t. But, I have a voice this year through my outreach so I’m empowering you today, should you choose to do so, do something positive and constructive to support #NoBraDay.  Share important information about early detection, healthy lifestyle and trying to prevent breast cancer. Support #MetastaticBD Day, which coincidentally happens to be today as well, or better yet, pick up a friend going through treatment and give them a ride or take them out for a favorite shake or malt after their treatments. Sometimes Ice-cream tastes delicious after chemo. These things I know.

About Terri

I am a patient educator and advocate for choices in breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Statistically, many women are not being informed of their choices due to many factors. Breast reconstruction is a personal choice. Providing information and education about those choices is a patient rite. It is the mission and focus of my work to provide that education and information.

Wonderful article! Thank you! As a BRCA1 Previvor whose had prophylactic surgeries I really don’t see how this whole ‘No Bra Day’ does anything useful.
