Participating in a Breast Reconstruction Tweet Chat

I invite you to join me and Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo of PRMA in San Antonio for a BCSM (breast cancer social media) tweet chat. It will be held on Monday evening, July 29th for an hour beginning at 9 pm Eastern / 8 pm Central / 6 pm Pacific on Twitter. Let’s go over the who, what, when, where, why, and how of participating in a breast reconstruction tweet chat.

Who Can Participate in the Tweet Chat?

Those who have a Twitter account can participate. Co-moderators of the #BCSM tweet chats, Dr. Deanna Attai, @DrAttai, and Alicia Staley, @stales, will guide the conversation the evening of July 29. They have graciously invited Dr. C and me as guests that evening.  My Twitter handle is @6state and Dr. Minas Chrysopoulo’s Twitter handle is @drchrysopoulo.

What is a Breast Reconstruction Tweet Chat?

The BCSM community picks a topic to focus on each Monday evening for those affected by breast cancer. Because this tweet chat will focus on breast reconstruction, I used a crowd sourcing method to ask the closed Facebook group I started, DiepCJourney: Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy, what questions they would like answers to about breast reconstruction. These are the topics they came up with and ones we hope to provide information for the evening of the tweet chat. Not all topics may be covered due to the hour of time allotted for the tweet chat.

  • What are all the options for breast reconstruction whether you are a woman or man affected by breast cancer?
  • How do you find a well-qualified, board certified plastic surgeon to perform your breast reconstruction?
  • What is the importance of coordinated care with a team of physicians to achieve optimal outcomes throughout treatment and surgery?
  • Can I regain feeling after my mastectomy if I choose breast reconstruction?
  • What will my aesthetic outcomes be if I choose autologous (using your own tissue) or implant-based breast reconstruction?
  • Is more than one surgery usually involved in breast reconstruction?
  • Let’s talk nipples! Losing them, reconstructing them, or tattooing them, What’s the answer?
  • How is pain controlled during recovery with breast reconstruction surgery?
  • What is the cost of breast reconstruction surgery?

How do you Participate in a Breast Reconstruction Tweet Chat?

Depending on what browser you are using, I frequently use Google chrome, I find the platform, “tchat” has been very successful for Monday evening tweet chats.

  • Click this link: www.tchat.io
  • There will be a search bar that says, “# enter hashtag#”.
  • Type in these four letters: bcsm.
  • You may asked to sign on to your Twitter account. After doing that, you should now be on the tweet chat.
  • If you’re new, listen and lurk. Watch the comments and conversation role through the session. It can be overwhelming if it is your first experience but just being here you will learn a lot!
  • Type a comment in the “Tweet #bscm” window at the top of the page to “chat with bcsm”.

About Terri

I am a patient educator and advocate for choices in breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Statistically, many women are not being informed of their choices due to many factors. Breast reconstruction is a personal choice. Providing information and education about those choices is a patient rite. It is the mission and focus of my work to provide that education and information.
